Goathland or is it Aidensfield?

After four hours of wandering around Castle Howard we drive towards Goathland the little village where ‘Heartbeat is filmed… the Moors are very spectacular with their vastness and ruggedness, we drive over a cattle grid into the North Yorkshire Moors National Park where sheep have right of way.
Goathland is having a identity crisis, half the stores have Aidensfield on their fronts… it is very touristy but charming as well, down a very steep road we find the Railway Station which is picture perfect and looks from a distance like a toy one.

Light is fading… well it is supposed to be Autumn… so we drive off to have a quick glimpse of Whitby, where Captain Cook grew up. Whitby is just as it looks in the picture postcards but very busy and full of tourists taking in the sights so we do a quick drive around and head back to Kirkby Malzeard and a nice quiet night with Richard, Judy and Dan, Emma’s parents and youngest brother.

Kirkby Malzeard is not far from Ripon, it’s a lovely little village with two pubs a church and a couple of stores but not many signs telling us how to get there so we manage to get a little bit lost… driving in the dark on single lane tightly hedged roads to - we don’t know where - isn’t quite my idea of fun but somehow we don’t meet any other cars and at last see a sign leading us back to civilization!! We are quite exhausted after three days of driving and fabulous sights.
